In 1958, while working in a rural Minnesota barn, the Steiger family revolutionized the farm equipment industry by developing the first successful four-wheel-drive farm tractor, which quickly became the industry standard, increasing American farmers’ productivity. The Steiger tractor is commemorated in the National Inventors Hall of Fame in Akron, OH.

In 1970, the same dedication led to the development of the Hydra-Mac Skid-steer Loader, the first successful application of a hydra-static final gear drive in a small loader. This innovation has been adopted by all loader manufacturers. The Hydra-Mac was also the first to use a “T” bar steering system, which effectively eliminated the need for foot pedals—simplifying the loader's operation, and cementing the brand as rugged, dependable American ingenuity.

Today, Hydra-Mac skid steers are best known for their old-school, overbuilt durability and a unique final-drive design (gear/planetary drives instead of the chain reductions used by many other makes). The combination of a heavy frame, gear-drive wheels, and simple hydraulic/mechanical systems is why owners still praise them years after manufacture.
